CM Sindh Inaugurates Bhains Colony Flyover to Cut Malir Congestion

The Sindh government has inaugurated the long-awaited Bhains Colony Flyover in Karachi, officially named the Khalid Bin Waleed Flyover, aiming to reduce congestion in District Malir and improve connectivity toward key industrial corridors.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah inaugurated the project on Saturday, calling it part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow and support economic activity in the city.

Built Under World Bank-Supported CLICK Program

The flyover was completed in five months at a reported cost of Rs1.865 billion under the Competitive & Livable City of Karachi (CLICK) initiative, which is backed by the World Bank.

According to officials, the project includes:

  • A grade-separated flyover at Bhains Colony
  • Road improvements along adjoining corridors
  • Better access to the National Highway (N-5) and Mehran Highway

The corridor connects traffic moving between Malir, Ibrahim Hyderi, and the Karachi Export Processing Zone, a critical industrial area for the city.

How Will It Impact Traffic?

The Bhains Colony intersection has long been considered a congestion hotspot, particularly due to:

  • Heavy container and industrial traffic
  • Bottlenecks near the railway crossing
  • Peak-hour congestion toward Mehran Highway

Officials say the flyover will:

  • Reduce travel time between N-5 and Mehran Highway
  • Minimise accident risks near the railway crossing
  • Improve freight movement toward industrial zones

While no official traffic reduction data was shared at the inauguration, the project is expected to ease daily commuter pressure in Malir and surrounding areas.

What’s Next for Karachi Infrastructure?

During the ceremony, the chief minister outlined several upcoming development priorities:

  • Azimpura flyover targeted within 100 days
  • Completion of Shahrah-e-Bhutto from Qayyumabad to Kathore in the coming months
  • Progress on the Murghi Khana Bridge
  • Proposed port extension plans

He also announced that approximately Rs300 billion in development projects would be proposed for Karachi in the upcoming provincial budget, with Rs8–13 billion already approved to accelerate civic works.

Why This Matters

Karachi’s growing population and expanding industrial footprint have intensified pressure on road infrastructure. Projects under the CLICK initiative aim to address chronic congestion points while improving freight and commuter mobility.

The long-term impact of the Bhains Colony Flyover will become clearer once traffic flow data and commuter response are assessed in the coming months.

For now, the project marks another step in Karachi’s ongoing infrastructure upgrade, with additional flyovers and road corridors expected to follow.
